“Travel teaches us to pause; photography teaches us to preserve those pauses.” (my favourite quote this week)
Hello Hello 👋
Spring is here and wow, what a colourful show nature is putting on right now! The flowers and blossoms are creating the most amazing palette of colours everywhere.

It’s the perfect time to grab your camera and head outside. With just a couple of lenses, you can create some truly beautiful images. (I miss Japan, especially this season, to enjoy the cherry blossom.)
🚀 10 Easy Tips to Shoot Spring Flowers 🌸
I wanted to share my 7 tips for photographing spring flowers. These have really helped me capture some great shots, and I think they’ll help you too! Also added below a shot from Amsterdam, Netherlands.
⛵ Flowers Are Everywhere – No Fancy Gardens Needed
You don’t need to visit a botanical garden to find gorgeous flowers. I often find snowdrops (specially in the UK) and poppies right next to roads, or even in my backyard.
It’s all about perspective.
Choose the right angle, and that ordinary roadside flower becomes something special. (Just be careful of traffic if you’re shooting near roads!)
Wander with purpose but photograph with feeling; the most moving images capture both place and perspective.
⛵ Get Low for a More Intimate Perspective
One rule I always follow: shoot at eye level with your subject.
Don’t photograph flowers from above – that creates flat, boring compositions.
Instead, crouch down or even lie on the ground to capture them from a more engaging angle. A flip screen on your camera is super helpful for these low shots.
⛵ Understand Light
Lighting can transform a floral photograph completely. Try these lighting conditions:
- Soft light (cloudy days) creates gentle, even tones
- Backlighting adds a dreamy glow, especially with translucent petals
Bonus Trick: Carry an umbrella or 5-in-1 reflector to block harsh sunlight and create soft, diffused lighting on your subject.
Every petal is nature’s brushstroke on a canvas of seasons.
⛵ Choose the Right Lens for the Shot
I use different lenses depending on what effect I want:
- 35 mm prime for Garden or wider View and macro detailed shot
- 70-200mm f/4: Perfect for dreamy bokeh and tighter compositions
⛵ Pay Attention to the Background
A messy background pulls attention away from your flower, so always adjust position for the cleanest backdrop. Look for:
- Smooth, colorful bokeh
- Dark, moody tones that make the subject pop
- Interesting light patterns like sun flares
In spring, even the smallest detail becomes worth framing.
⛵ Use Flowers as Natural Framing
Wider lenses (like 15-35mm) let you use blossoms as frames around another subject – whether it’s architecture, a portrait, or another focal point.
Recommended Settings: Use a fast shutter speed (1/500s or higher) to avoid motion blur from wind or use burst mode.
⛵ Enhance the Magic in Post-Processing
My final touch is subtle editing to enhance the dreamy quality. I usually:
- Reduce contrast slightly for a softer look
- Use brushes to smooth out distracting elements
- Adjust colors to make petals pop
🚀 BONUS TIP: The Magic Hour
Early morning or late afternoon light can transform ordinary flowers into magical subjects. The golden glow adds warmth and dimension to petals, while the low angle of the sun creates beautiful rim lighting. Morning shoots also offer the benefit of still air (less wind to move your flowers) and those gorgeous dew drops!
Remember, the best way to learn is by doing. So grab your camera and get out there – spring won’t wait!
🟢 Until the next one, Keep chasing horizons, one frame at a time and let’s be mindful of our environment.
Cheers!!
