Apologies for the gap in my weekly newsletter — a bit of travel mixed with some much-needed rest threw off my schedule. But good to be back, and I’ve got something timely for you, especially if you’re grabbing deals on Amazon Prime Day. 🚀 This week, I want to talk about memory cards. While it seems simple, choosing the right one can make or break your photography and videography experience. I recently had to pick up a few extra memory cards and thought it’d be the perfect time to share a quick guide on what you should look for when buying one.Let’s dive right in. ⛵ Compatibility Is Key 📸 First things first, make sure the card is compatible with your camera. Not all cameras use the same type of card — you might need an SD, SDHC, SDXC, or even a CFexpress card. Double-check your camera’s manual to see what works best. Some cameras can use more than one type of card, but it’s usually best to go for the one with the highest speed compatibility, especially if your camera supports multiple formats (e.g., SDXC and CFexpress Type A). High write speeds allow your camera to save data without lag, especially crucial when shooting 4K or higher-resolution video. Here’s a quick rundown on what to look for: • Speed Classes : Look for the Video Speed Class rating (like V30, V60, V90). The higher the number, the better the card can handle high-res video. • Minimum Write Speed : Focus on minimum sequential write speed, not maximum speed. A card rated at V60 can sustain 60MB/s — ideal for high-quality 4K recording. Remember, a card with a maximum speed of 200MB/s but a low minimum write speed might not be suitable for continuous high-quality video. Source: Internet ⛵ Don’t Skimp on Capacity🧳 Let’s face it: video files eat up space quickly. A minute of 4K footage can easily take up a few GBs, so go for at least 128GB if you’re planning longer shoots. A card with ample storage ensures you won’t have to swap cards frequently, keeping your workflow smooth and uninterrupted. Every photograph is a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone. ⛵ Faster Read Speeds for Workflow Efficiency⏩ Read speed doesn’t affect the recording process, but it does impact how quickly you can transfer files to your computer. If you’re often in a time crunch, faster read speeds can save you valuable minutes in post-production. ⛵ Be Aware of File Size & Resolution🎥 For example, a 1080p video at 120fps or a 4K video at 60fps can generate similar file sizes, so think ahead about your filming style. Higher resolution and frame rates require more storage. Plan accordingly so you don’t run out of space mid-shoot. And there you have it! Choosing the right memory card can be overwhelming with so many options, but focusing on compatibility, speed, and capacity will guide you in the right direction.
