[R86] 🥾 Calling Yourself a Photographer? Here’s When

“ A camera is the perfect excuse to explore what you can’t see. ” (my favourite quote this week) Hello Hello 👋 Ever felt unsure about calling yourself “a photographer”? I was listening Sean Tucker (a great photographer and storyteller) and thought it’s good to share with you as well. We all share this feeling time to time at least most us. Maybe you’ve been taking photos for a while now, loving every second behind the camera, but when it comes to actually claiming the title, you just can’t. I totally get that. I’ve been there too! Despite years of capturing moments, it sometimes feels a little strange to say it out loud: I’m a photographer. So why do we hesitate? What’s holding us back, and when can we finally feel comfortable saying, “Yep, I’m a photographer!” without second-guessing ourselves? 🚀 The Trap This is something most of us know too well—impostor syndrome. That feeling like no matter how much you’ve learned or how good you’ve gotten, it’s never enough to truly own the title. I’ve camera over 15 years, and yet, some days, calling myself a photographer still feels like wearing someone else’s shoes. Impostor syndrome is basically that inner voice telling you, “You’re not good enough.” You’ve probably heard it before. It makes you feel like you don’t belong, even when your work shows otherwise. Wild, right? 🚀 Why We Hold Ourselves Back There are a few reasons why it’s hard to just own the title of photographer. I think most of us can relate to at least one of these: ⛵ The Perfectionism Trap : This is a big one. If you think every photo has to be flawless, you’re setting yourself up for endless frustration. But here’s the thing—photos don’t have to be perfect to be meaningful. ⛵ Feeling Like You Don’t Know Enough : Sometimes it feels like there’s so much to learn and know. But guess what? You don’t have to know every single detail about photography to call yourself a photographer. ⛵ Comparing Yourself to Others : Social media makes this even harder. It’s easy to see all those picture-perfect photos and think everyone else has it figured out. Truth is, no one really does. We’re all learning and figuring it out as we go. ⛵ Keeping It to Yourself : When you keep your work to yourself because you’re afraid of judgment, it only makes the feeling worse. The more we share, the more we realize everyone else has doubts too. 🚀 How to Actually Start Feeling Like a Photographer It’s tough, but you can work on changing that mindset little by little. Here are some things that help me, and I hope they help you too: ⛵ Acknowledge What You’re Feeling : Start by recognizing those moments when self-doubt creeps in. Just knowing it’s there and calling it out helps take away some of its power. ⛵ Stop Comparing, Focus on Your Journey : Instead of looking at what others are doing, focus on how much you’ve improved. Go back and look at your old photos—you’ll probably be amazed at how far you’ve come. ⛵ Celebrate the Small Wins : Did you finally get that tricky shot? Awesome! Celebrate it. Give yourself credit for the progress you’ve made, not just the things you still want to learn. ⛵ Find a Community : Surround yourself with other photographers, whether online or in person. Sharing your work and getting feedback from others is the best way to feel more confident in what you do. 🚀 When Can You Call Yourself a Photographer? So here’s the thing: You’re a photographer when you decide you are. It’s not about how long you’ve been at it or how much you know. If you’re intentionally creating photos and thinking about how to capture moments, then you’re a photographer. It’s as simple as that. There’s no perfect moment to start using the title. Whether you’re just starting out or have been at it for years, if you’re passionate about it, that’s what matters. So next time someone asks what you do, try it out: I’m a photographer. Feels pretty good, right? At the end of the day, being a photographer isn’t about fancy equipment or knowing everything there is to know. It’s about your love for capturing those little moments. And that’s something worth holding onto.
