“Travel light, but never leave your curiosity behind.” (my favourite quote this week)
Hello Hello 👋
I’ve got something really useful to share with you today. We’re talking about layering – you know, that thing we all think we know how to do until we end up sweaty or freezing on our outdoor adventures!
That’s why layering matters. It’s not just about piling on clothes—it’s about wearing the right ones in the right way so you stay comfortable no matter what.
We’re heading to Iceland soon, where the weather changes faster than your phone battery drops in the cold. Rain, wind, snow—it’s all unpredictable. And since you can’t change outfits every five minutes, layering is the only way to stay warm and dry without feeling like a walking pile of jackets. Here’s how to do it right.
Adventure starts when you’re dressed for it
🚀 Layering 101 – The Three Essential Layers🧥
Think of layering like making a sandwich (stay with me here!). Each layer has its own job:
⛵ Base Layer (Next-to-Skin): Stay Dry
Purpose: Pulls sweat away from your skin.
Materials:
- Wool: Retains warmth even when wet, naturally odor-resistant.
- Synthetic (Polyester, Nylon): Lightweight, dries quickly, but may retain odor.
Weight:
- Lightweight: Best for high-activity levels.
- Midweight/Heavyweight: For cold weather or low-intensity activities.
Cold is just a mindset—unless you’re underdressed.
⛵ Mid Layer (Insulation): Stay Warm
Purpose: Traps body heat while letting moisture escape.
Options:
- Fleece: Breathable, stretchy, dries fast.
- Down (Natural Insulation): Super warm and lightweight but loses warmth when wet.
- Synthetic Insulation: Retains warmth even when damp, more durable than down.
⛵ Outer Layer (Shell): Stay Protected
Purpose: Shields against wind, rain, and snow.
Types:
- Waterproof Shell: Best for wet conditions (Gore-Tex, eVent).
- Windproof Shell: Lightweight, protects against cold wind but not rain.
- Softshell: Flexible, water-resistant, ideal for active use.
Dress for the journey, not just the destination.
🚀 Choosing the Right Layers for Your Trip
⛵ For Cold & Wet Conditions → Wool base + Synthetic insulation + Waterproof shell
⛵ For Dry & Cold Conditions → Wool base + Down insulation + Windproof shell
⛵ For High-Activity Trips → Lightweight synthetic base + Breathable fleece + Softshell
Don’t wait until you’re cold to add layers – it’s harder to warm up than to stay warm
🚀 Tip: Other Important Layering Accessories
- Neck Gaiters & Buffs: Keep wind and cold out without the bulk of a scarf.
- Gloves & Liners: Layering gloves (thin liner + insulated outer) allows flexibility.
- Hats & Beanies: Keep your head warm—heat escapes quickly!
- Waterproof Socks: Essential in wet conditions to keep feet dry.
Think about your whole body – don’t forget neck gaiters, gloves, and a warm hat
Getting your layers right isn’t just about comfort – it’s about safety and enjoying your time outdoors. When you’re comfortable, you can focus on the amazing views, take better photos, and actually have fun instead of thinking about how cold or sweaty you are!
P.S. Got any layering tricks that work great for you? Hit reply and let me know – I’d love to hear them!
🟢 Until the next email, Keep chasing horizons, one frame at a time and let’s be mindful of our environment.
Cheers!!
