" Your photo is your story—don’t let AI rewrite it "(my favourite quote this week) Hello Hello 👋 Let's talk about something that's been bugging a lot of us lately - AI companies gobbling up our hard-earned photos without permission. You've probably heard the heated debates about AI and copyright theft, right? Well, Today, I'm sharing two new tools that might just help us protect our work. 🚀 The AI Scraping Problem AI scraping is basically digital theft on a massive scale. These big tech companies (you know who they are) are feeding their AI models with millions of images - including our copyrighted work - without asking or paying. Most of us don't have the resources to sue these billion-dollar giants, so we need practical solutions. Art is human. Protect what makes it special. 🚀 Two new tools: Glaze and Nightshade. ⛵ What Are These Tools? Both tools were created by a team of researchers who actually care about artists' rights. In one line, here's how they work: Glaze : Makes invisible-to-humans changes to your images that confuse AI about your artistic style. Nightshade : Goes a step further and tricks AI into seeing something completely different than what's actually in your photo. Both are free downloads that might just save your work from being AI-lunch! 🚀 My Test: The Good and The Not-So-Good I spent some time testing both tools, and here's my take: ⛵ The Installation Process Both programs are pretty hefty downloads (about 2.5GB) and require at least 4GB of storage. The setup isn't super slick possibly deal with security warnings as approved by Microsoft store yet. In a world of AI duplicates, authentic vision becomes priceless. ⛵ Using Glaze After selecting your photo, you adjust two sliders: Intensity (how strong the protection is) Render Quality (better protection but takes longer) At default settings, it took about a minute to process a 20MP image on decent config computer. ⛵ Using Nightshade The process is similar to Glaze, but instead of hiding your style, it's confusing the AI about what's actually in your image. The worth of an image lies not in its pixels, but in the moment captured that can never be replicated. ⛵ What I Found The good news: Both tools do seem to add protection to your images. The not-so-great news: They can leave visible artifacts, especially in areas with minimal detail or "negative space." These artifacts were less noticeable in: Busier parts of photos Images that were reduced in size Photos with lots of details ⛵ Is It Worth It? Let's be real - these tools aren't perfect yet. But they're a step in the right direction, and they're mostly free! Consider them another layer of protection, like adding a IPTC copyright watermark or Metadata. Protecting your art isn't selfish - it's preserving the human touch in an increasingly artificial world. 🎁 Bonus Tip If you can, consider disabling right-click saving on your website and using services like Pixsy to track and enforce copyright claims. Every little bit helps. 🚀 What Next This is just the beginning. As an active member of Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI) I can confidently say, we'll likely see more tools like these emerge. They'll get better, faster, and eventually might become plugins for Lightroom, Photoshop, and other editing software. Until then, we might need to get creative about protecting our work - whether that's using these tools, adding watermarks, or keeping our best images behind paywalls. Remember when we used to buy photography books and magazines to see great work? Maybe some aspects of that model weren't so bad after all. Keep creating, keep protecting your work, and let's hope for a future where AI and human artists can coexist without exploitation.
