We all know the struggle of packing light as a photographer – one extra lens, and suddenly our bags feel like they're carrying bricks.

Today, I'm sharing a simple yet powerful tip to help you lighten your load while keeping your precious travel photos safe and sound.

Backing up your photos on the go is crucial, whether you're trekking through the Scotland's highlands or exploring the bustling streets of Tokyo. Trust me, I've learned the hard way – from card and ssd failures I've seen it all.

In the world of travel photography, every shot tells a story. Make sure yours are backed up and ready to share. That's why I'm excited to share my new favorite method for backing up photos directly to a hard drive using just your smartphone. Read last week’s LensLetter edition here.

🚀 Here's how it's done: ⛵ Connect and Copy: Use a card reader to transfer photos from your memory card to your phone. Create a folder labeled "Camera Backup" in your phone's internal memory and copy the photos there.

⛵ Organize Your Drive: Connect your hard drive (SSD) to your phone and create a main folder for your trip, with subfolders for each backup date.

⛵ Transfer and Repeat: Copy the photos from your phone's backup folder to the corresponding folder on your hard drive. Then, repeat the process with a second hard drive to ensure redundancy.

It's that simple! No laptop required, just your trusty smartphone and a couple of external drives. 🚀 Now, a few technical details to keep in mind: ⛵ If you're using an iPhone with a Lightning port, you'll need an SD card reader designed for Lightning ports.

⛵ Make sure your phone has enough free space for the backup. Consider using expandable storage if needed.

⛵ Transfer speeds may vary depending on your phone's USB-C standard. Faster USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 phones will transfer photos more quickly.

By following these steps, you can secure your memories and travel with peace of mind. And remember, it's always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your photos!
