Okay, confession time. For two weeks straight, Instagram kept shoving Hasselblad video & ads in my face. You know how it is - you watch one camera video and suddenly the algorithm thinks you're made of money. I'm a happy Canon shooter. Always have been(over a decade). But these video had this simple hook: "100MP camera lets you crop 300x in post." Which sounds ridiculous, right? But curiosity got the better of me. So I dug deeper. Turns out, they didn't just release one camera. They released two things that might actually matter. Travel is the only classroom where light is the teacher. 🚀 What Actually Changed The X2D II isn't just a megapixel monster with a fresh coat of paint. They fixed the stuff that actually annoyed people about the original. ⛵ Continuous Autofocus Finally Happened The biggest complaint about the first X2D? It could only do single-shot autofocus. You know, like cameras from 2005. Now it tracks moving subjects like a normal modern camera should. ⛵ 10-Stop Image Stabilisation This is where things get interesting. Most camera companies claim crazy stabilisation numbers that don't work in real life. But even if Hasselblad is being optimistic and you only get 7-8 stops, that's hand-holding a medium format camera for several seconds. Every lens teaches you to see the world a little differently. Think about that for a minute. ⛵ The Screen Actually Works Now Minor thing, but the tilting LCD was blocked by the viewfinder on the original. Classic case of engineers not actually using their own product. Fixed now. ⛵ They Made It Cheaper Here's the kicker - the new camera costs $800 less than the original. When's the last time a camera company improved their product AND dropped the price? ⛵ The Lens That Makes Sense The 35-100mm f/2.8-4 is actually more interesting than the camera. It's lighter than their older 35-75mm despite being longer and faster. It covers the focal lengths most people actually use (28-75mm full-frame equivalent). And at $4,600, it's expensive but not Hasselblad expensive. For context, their other similar lens costs $5,200. 🚀 In Reality Look, this is still a $7,400 camera body. The lens is still $4,600. You're looking at $12,000 before you add a memory card. But here's what's wild—that 100MP sensor really does let you crop like crazy. Shoot at 35mm, crop to 85mm, and you still have 40+ megapixels to work with. It's like carrying multiple lenses without the weight. 🚀 Who This Actually Makes Sense For Landscape photographers who want maximum detail Portrait shooters who need that medium format look Anyone who hates carrying multiple lenses People who print really, really big 🚀 Who Should Skip It Everyone else Seriously, unless you're printing wall-sized or need that specific medium format aesthetic, your current camera is probably fine. A good photograph freezes time; a great one carries you back to the moment. 🚀 The Instagram Truth Those "crop 300x" videos? They're not lying, but they're not telling the whole story either. Yes, you can crop aggressively. No, it doesn't magically make you a better photographer. Good composition at 24mm beats perfect pixels at 100mm every time. 🚀 Bottom Line The X2D II fixes real problems and costs less than its predecessor. The 35-100mm lens covers useful focal lengths without breaking your back. Is it revolutionary? No. Is it better than the original? Absolutely. Should you buy one? Probably not. But if you're already in the medium format world or making serious money from your photos, this combo actually makes sense. Bonus Tip: If you're curious about the medium format look but don't want to spend $12K, rent one for a weekend after its launch in few weeks. The difference is real, but so is the weight, cost, and complexity. Make sure you actually need it before you need a second mortgage. The algorithm will keep pushing these videos. At least now you know what you're actually looking at.
