Let’s get back to today’s topic. If you love pointing your camera at the night sky, 2025 will be a feast of celestial treats.
From comets and eclipses to meteor showers and supermoons, the universe is setting up some spectacular shows for us.
🚀 Let’s break down the events you need to mark on your calendar and how to make the most of them!
⛵ January 13, 2025 – Comet C/2024 D3 Atlas
Comets are unpredictable, but when they shine, they make for unforgettable photos. On January 13th, this comet reaches its closest point to the Sun and may even be visible to the naked eye.
- Use a telephoto lens (200-400mm) and a sturdy tripod.
- Plan your shot just after sunset using apps like PhotoPills to track its direction.
- Experiment with long exposures (10-30 seconds) to capture the comet’s tail against the starry backdrop.
⛵ March 14 & September 7, 2025 – Total Lunar Eclipses
Lunar eclipses transform the moon into a mesmerizing “blood moon.” March’s eclipse will be visible in the Americas and parts of Africa, while September’s will shine over Europe, Asia, and Africa.
- Use a telephoto lens (300mm+), ISO 800, f/5.6, and a shutter speed of 1/250s.
- Want something unique? Capture a timelapse to show the eclipse’s progression.
The night sky whispers stories untold.
⛵ February–October 2025 – Milky Way Season
The Milky Way’s galactic core will be at its best from February to October. Both hemispheres offer unique views, so plan based on your location.
- Shoot during new moons for darker skies.
- Use a wide-angle lens (14-24mm), ISO 3200, f/2.8, and a 20-second exposure.
- Add depth by including dramatic foregrounds like mountains or silhouettes.
⛵ March 29 & September 21, 2025 – Partial Solar Eclipses
Solar eclipses are captivating, even when partial. March’s event will be visible in North America and Europe, while September’s graces Antarctica and New Zealand.
‼️Safety First: Always use solar filters for your camera and your eyes.
- Use a mid-range telephoto lens (200mm) to frame the eclipse alongside the landscape.
⛵ January–April & September–December 2025 – Aurora Borealis
The auroras are expected to be stunning in 2025. For the northern lights, visit high-latitude regions like Iceland or Canada. In the southern hemisphere, winter months will showcase the Aurora Australis.
- Wide-angle lens (14-24mm), ISO 1600 – 3200, and a shutter speed of 5-15 seconds are key.
- Capture the auroras alongside the Milky Way for a jaw-dropping composite shot.
The best night photos start with planning.
⛵ December 13–14, 2025 – The Geminid Meteor Shower
The Geminids are the year’s most spectacular meteor shower, boasting over 100 meteors per hour. This year’s low moon phase ensures optimal viewing conditions.
- Use a wide-angle lens and continuous shooting mode.
- Try settings like ISO 3200, f/2.8, and a 20-second exposure.
- Frame away from the radiant for longer meteor trails.
⛵ November 5 & December 5, 2025 – Supermoons
Supermoons appear larger and brighter, making them perfect for dramatic night sky photography.
- Pair the supermoon with golden hour lighting for surreal compositions.
- Use a telephoto lens (400mm+), ISO 100-400, and an aperture of f/8 for sharp details.
- Apps like PhotoPills can help you plan shots with landmarks for added impact.
🚀 Prep Like a Pro
Astrophotography isn’t just about creativity; it’s about preparation. Tools like PhotoPills or PlanIt Pro can help you scout locations, track celestial events, and time your shots perfectly. I am paid customer of PhotoPills for years and it absolutely good even iOS widgets are great.
Experiment with different techniques, angles, and compositions to make your photos stand out.
So, gear up, plan ahead, and let 2025 be your best year under the stars. Remember, every celestial event is an opportunity to tell a new story.
Astrophotography: where patience meets infinity.
🟢 Until the next email, Keep chasing horizons, one frame at a time and let’s be mindful of our environment.
Cheers!!
