Lately, I've been immersed in writing blog posts about Tokyo, Japan from a local's perspective. It got me thinking about how my interest in visiting major cities and touristy locations has been steadily declining over the years.

You know, those crowded places, long queues, and the never-ending struggle to find the perfect spot for landscape photography. Plus, let's not forget the inevitable tourist-packed locations when friends and family come to visit.

So, I took some time to reflect on this shift and came up with a list of reasons why I increasingly prefer the countryside over big cities and touristy hotspots.

🚀 Prefer countryside over cities Now, I must admit, it's not a fair comparison, as traveling to touristy destinations and countryside areas offer distinct experiences that can vary in several aspects.

But let's explore some key differences between the two:

⛵ Crowd and Atmosphere : Touristy destinations are known for their hustle and bustle. Touristy destinations often attract a large number of visitors, resulting in crowded streets, busy attractions, and a bustling atmosphere. In contrast, the countryside offers a serene and peaceful environment, with fewer tourists and a slower pace of life.

⛵ Cultural Authenticity : While touristy destinations have their iconic landmarks and abundant amenities, they can sometimes feel less authentic due to their commercialised nature. On the other hand, the countryside provides a closer connection to local culture, traditions, and an authentic way of life.

⛵ Natural Beauty : While touristy destinations may boast architectural wonders or man-made attractions, the countryside steals the show with its breathtaking natural beauty. Rolling hills, expansive landscapes, and untouched wilderness offer opportunities for outdoor activities and exploration.

⛵ Interactions with Locals : In touristy destinations, the interaction with locals may be limited mainly to tourist service providers, such as hotel staff, tour guides, and restaurant staff. In the countryside, there is often more opportunity to engage with local communities, farmers, artisans, and villagers, fostering a deeper understanding of local traditions and ways of life.

⛵ Pace of Travel : Touristy destinations often encourage a fast-paced itinerary, with the aim of ticking off as many attractions as possible. On the contrary, exploring the countryside allows for a more relaxed pace, enabling you to truly unwind, immerse yourself in nature, and appreciate the local surroundings.

⛵ Photographic Opportunities : Ah, photography! Let me share a little observation from my time in Japan. When you take out your camera and start snapping away, something magical happens. People either stop and patiently wait or move gracefully behind you, ensuring they don't disturb your shot. That's not something you'd typically find in crowded touristy places. For landscape or aerial photography, the countryside offers a fresh perspective, uncrowded locations to fly your drone, and plenty of space to set up your tripod.

Now, both types of travel have their own merits, and the choice between touristy destinations and countryside areas ultimately depends on personal preferences and the desired travel experience. Some of us seek the thrill and energy of popular tourist spots, while others crave the tranquility and authenticity of the countryside. So, which one is your favourite?
