Half the photography community is running around saying "just fix it in post" while the other half is hoarding $400 filters like they're made of unicorn tears. Both sides are wrong. The world's best viewfinder is an open mind and a packed bag. 🚀 Here's What Actually Happens You're out shooting. Light's perfect. Composition's dialed. You nail the shot... except there's this massive reflection ruining everything. Or the sky's completely blown out. Or that waterfall looks like frozen spaghetti because you couldn't slow your shutter down. "No worries," you think. "I'll fix it later." Three hours later, you're still in Lightroom trying to recreate physics with sliders. Spoiler alert: it's not working . 🚀 The Truth About Filters Some things just can't be faked in post. Period. A polarising filter removes reflections by controlling light waves. You literally cannot recreate this effect digitally because the information was never captured in the first place. ND filters let you control time itself - slowing down waterfalls, smoothing clouds, creating motion blur in broad daylight. Sure, you could blend 50 photos together, but why torture yourself? Adventure doesn’t wait for post-production. 🚀 What Actually Works (And Why) ⛵ Polarising Filters These bad boys cut through reflections like nothing else. Shooting through water? Glass storefronts? That annoying glare ruining your sunset shot? A circular polariser handles it in real-time. No amount of post-processing wizardry can retrieve detail that was never captured. ⛵ Neutral Density Filters Want those silky waterfalls everyone's obsessed with? ND filters let you use longer exposures in bright daylight. Sure, you could try stacking multiple shots in post, but why complicate things when one filter does the job perfectly? ⛵ UV Protection Your lens cost more than most people's rent. A quality UV filter protects that investment from scratches, dust, and the occasional coffee spill without degrading image quality. 🚀 When Filters Actually Matter Shooting reflective surfaces (water, glass, wet pavement) Creating motion blur in bright conditions Protecting expensive lenses during travel Getting better in-camera results that require less editing time Situations where you can't reshoot (once-in-a-lifetime moments) 🚀 The Bottom Line Filters aren't dead—they're just misunderstood. While post-processing can work magic, physics still matters. Some effects need to happen at the lens, not the laptop. The photographers getting the best results? They're using both. Smart in-camera techniques combined with thoughtful editing. Not one or the other. ⛵ Bonus Tip Start with a circular polariser (CPL) and a 3-stop ND filter. These two will handle 80% of situations where filters actually make a difference. Skip the UV filter unless you're shooting in harsh conditions—modern lens coatings are pretty tough already. Next time someone tells you filters are obsolete, hand them your camera with a polariser and watch their mind change in real-time. This World Photography Day, don't just celebrate the gear. Celebrate the stories. The moments. The weird angles only you see.
